Best Multi-purpose Knife?
I was looking at the SOG Power Assist mult-purpose knife a couple of days ago. Looks good--but maybe a bit heavy (10 oz). There are many other brands like Gerber (etc...). I was just wondering if anyone carried one and what their favorite multi-p knife was.

I've been using the Gerber Multi Tool for over 10 years. It's a good knife. Kobalt makes an ok multi tool for the price. I bought a couple for the family's BOB and use one at work (it's inexpensive so I don't mind as much if it walks away).

Leatherman Wave. Perfect selection of tools and all the blades lock open. My first I broke doing things I never should have been doing with it and I know better. Sent it back to Leatherman and they sent me 2, yes 2, brand new ones back in return. Leatherman has made a customer for life and the Wave is their best.

how do you carry yours around? in pants pocket? clip to belt? |
Re: Best Multi-purpose Knife?
Wave for bang for the buck, but the Charge is a step up. I've used both extensively. And destroyed one of each, doing things that should have voided the warranty. But they sent me new ones. The Charge is a little lighter and has higher quality blades. But they are the same basic setup. Higher quality than the gerbers that I have seen. I haven't done more than play with the SOG at the shop, seems solid, and more heavy than maybe necessary.

No pack, in the sheath on my belt. Never really felt confident in the removable clip. But I was also working with a population that I REALLY didn't want to arm. |
Re: Best Multi-purpose Knife?
I don't know how multi-use this is, other then being able to use it as a spearhead too, but there is a deal on factory-seconds Cold Steel bushman series knives here:
http://www.ltspecpro.com/bushmanseries.html 3 for $30. All reports that I've read say it is usually run in the paint/finish in the handle, though one or two reports said it was a bad grind on the blade too. Don't really know what you'll get, but @ $10 each its a hell of a deal! |
Re: Best Multi-purpose Knife?
I've been carrying a Leatherman Juice in my pants pocket for some time now. Bigger models have more tool, but for tool that is light enough and small enough to carry in your pocket this Juice would be hard to beat.
My first post! Yee ha! Doug |
